Due to the current gap in continued funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the NSF Unidata Program Center has temporarily paused most operations. See NSF Unidata Pause in Most Operations for details.

Hello, for those of you who may have experience with GDAL, how comprehensive is the support of the GDAL libraries for NetCDF? Is this support equivalent to the NetCDDF libraries provided by UNIDATA and what version of the UNIDATA NetCDF libraries in particular. ie: with GDAL's netcdf implementation will one be able to bring the range of sample netcdf data files listed on http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/examples/files.html.
Vardis, Hopefully others can speak to this in more detail, but I wanted to stress that the GDAL netcdf driver uses UNIDATA's netcdf library. It will not support all netcdf files. In particular it tries to map the netcdf arrays to appears as images (2D grids) in GDAL and if it fails to establish a mapping it will give up. Lots of auxilary information is not exposed through GDAL and many array configurations are likely inaccessable through GDAL.
