netCDF convention for lidar data?

NCAR is planning to purchase 1 or more lidars for use on the G5 and the C130 aircraft. (FYI, this is the CAPRIS program).
We're asking the vendors to write their data in netCDF (or possibly HDF5). We want to provide the vendors guidance so we don't get lots of incompatible netCDF files.
If you are using netCDF for lidar data, please send me your convention (ncdump -c -h)
Or, if you have any advice on creating a convention for lidar data, please let me know.
