[netcdf-java] openInMemory compression

I am looking to compress a netcdfFile object that I currently have in
memory, before I put it onto a JMS topic.  So far, I have been unable to do
so with the netcdf library - although using a ZipOutputStream seems
promising - and was wondering if anyone had experience with this?
