Hi Yuan,  Yes, I did in fact select "use display area".  To be clear, adaptive 
resolution *is* working as advertised when I zoom in.  However, the label in 
the legend box does not update to show the change in the data point sampling.

Kevin,
     You probably did not check the Match Display Region checkbox in the
display control View > Match Display Region.
