Hi Jacob - a few things to try...

1. You may have to set your env DISPLAY variable to something like   ":0.0" -- 
especially if you are running this from cron.   Im not a bash expert, but I 
think its                 export DISPLAY ":0.0"     vs in csh  its     setenv 
DISPLAY ":0.0"

2. It might be your projection is not correct -- maybe just try CED  vs NOR

3. Another thing you will want to try is just to make sure nothing else goofy 
is going on, run the script with the device set to an Xwindow  to see if the 
device driver is even working       device="xw|test|1024;768"  and then   
device="gf|test.gf|1024;768"
