[galeon] OGC CF-netCDF status update

NOTE: The galeon mailing list is no longer active. The list archives are made available for historical reasons.

Hi all,

This note includes a summary of issues and action items from the CF-netCDF
session at the OGC Technical Committee meetings at the UK Met Office in
Exeter.

Since that meeting, the 30 day public comment period for the proposed
Enhanced Data Model Extension to the netCDF core standard has ended with no
comments received. This means that the proposed extension goes to the
full TC for adoption as an OGC extension standard.

Still outstanding, however, is the proposed CF Conventions extension to the
netCDF core. As yet, there has been no feedback from the OGC Architecture
Board.

Issues that came up at the Exeter session:

   - Situation regarding representation of ISO metadata in netCDF is
unclear to the SWG members in the Exeter session. This should
be an agenda
      item for the next TC.
      - Coordination needed activities of OGC and CF community relating to
CF data models and conventions for uncertainty and quality in datasets

Ben's Action items:

   - Arrange for presentation on ncISO at future CF-netCDF session
      - Check on Unidata web page that lists conventions associated with
netCDF: current activity status and future directions
      - Check on the possibility of using ESIP mailing list and wiki as a
place for the Quality and Uncertainty conventions

Lorenzo will follow up on issues relating to Quality and Uncertainty as
they relate to the CF community.

An additional item that may be of special interest to our community is a
MetOceans Profile for Web Coverage Services that has been proposed by Peter
Trevelyen of the UK Met Office. His presentation slides are available at

https://portal.opengeospatial.org/files/?artifact_id=49329

Those of you who participated in the CF-netCDF session, please let me know
if I've missed or misstated anything.
Thanks.
