In the CF Conventions document at

look at "Example 5.10. British National Grid" and see if that helps.
If you do not already, I can recommend using the NetCDF-Java's
"ToosUI" to inspect and work with files (perhaps using NcML to
effectively alter the structure or definitions for existing files).
