In the CF Conventions document at
<http://cf-pcmdi.llnl.gov/documents/cf-conventions/1.5/cf-conventions.html#grid-mappings-and-projections>

look at "Example 5.10. British National Grid" and see if that helps.
If you do not already, I can recommend using the NetCDF-Java's
"ToosUI" to inspect and work with files (perhaps using NcML to
effectively alter the structure or definitions for existing files).
