Hi Mike-

Another great "pull" for encouraging data writers to include as
much metadata as possible is an application that won't load the
data unless that important piece of information is provided. Of
course, like the CF checker the application would clearly report
what is missing as a help to the data writer.

Question for Don: How would IDV show an XY field that has no Z
value specified?

We display the data at the "default" Z position which is
either the bottom or top of the box (depending on the data).
However, the user can move the data up or down in the 3D box.
For point data plots, the user can decide to plot the data
at the specified vertical position in the data or ignore that
and move it in box space.
