I have published the AWIPS II Data Access Framework as its own python package, currently available on PyPI The github page for this project is https://github.com/Unidata/python-awips The documentation page is http://python-awips.readthedocs.org/en/latest/ which includes display examples using Matplotlib, Basemap, Cartopy, and Metpy.
