Due to the current gap in continued funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the NSF Unidata Program Center has temporarily paused most operations. See NSF Unidata Pause in Most Operations for details.

Are you asking about the D2D perspective or the National Centers
Perspective (NCP)? In D2D you hold right-click the product in the stack
(lower-right) and select "Load as Image" for a faux color-filled contour
map. In the NCP, color filled contours are determined by GEMPAK/NAWIPS
restore file syntax, accessed in the same was as D2D, hold right-click the
resource at bottom right and select "Edit...".

It is my understanding from the instructions that, as an 'average Joe' user

Unidata has made available a data server for testing, hosted in the
Microsoft Azure cloud. The address is edex-azure.unidata.ucar.edu. See
point 5 at http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/awips2/doc/cave_install.html
for more information.
