SuomiNet Status Report: October 2001

Prepared by Jeff Weber

    SuomiNet Begins Deployment

  • Updated Timeline:

    • Number of sites: ~100 (Currently 86)
    • Number of "active" sites ~7
    • All operating system disks have been cloned at Dell
    • First site deployment: March/April 2001
    • Final site deployment: August 2002
    • Estimated time for site to deploy SuomiNet hardware: 2-4 Weeks
  • Data Volume:
    • Raw Data Volume Will Approximate .6Mb per Day/Site
    • Raw Data Tentatively Designed to be in BINEX Format.
    • Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) Products: 1-2 Kb per Day/Site
    • Total Electron Content (TEC) Product: 3-5 Mb per Day (not site specific)
    • netCDF format is being investigated for the value added products of TEC and PWV/IPW.
    • Slant Measurements: 50-100 Kb per Day/Site
  • LDM Applications:
    • LDM/IDD Software is Being Applied to Gather the Raw Data from each Site
    • LDM/IDD Software also Applied to Distribute Post-Processing PWV/TEC Products to the Community
  • Water Vapor Products Currently Available
  • As time progresses (and sites begin delivering data) a map of ALL active SuomiNet sites will be available for point and click access to the products derived from that site, and any composites that are available, i.e. hemispheric TEC, U.S. IPW, etc..
  • A FORTRAN program generated by Russ Rew to visualize the netCDF datasets of precipitable water and total electron content has been used successfully at Plymouth State College and will be formally announced after additional testing.
