Trip Report from the NOAA 2011 Satellite Direct Read Out Conference

The 2011 NOAA Satellite Direct Read Out Conference was held in Miami, Florida on April 4-8. The focus for this years conference was "Real-time Access for Real-time Applications".

  • Focus on data sharing and collaboration (International focus)
  • disaster.com (could be a good use for RAMADDA)

  • EMWIN vs LRIT
  • GOES-12 - International Partners, many derived products
  • GOES-R - GOES Lightning Mapper (collects data terrestrial sites may miss)
• Day 3
  • Polar orbiting platforms POES overviews
  • COMET introduced their suite of educational modules
• Day 4
  • Wallops facility may need to be moved
  • Scatterometer use to detect rogue waves
  • McIDAS-V demonstrated
  • DVBS-2 and GTS fileservers discussed
• Day 5
  • Summary, no new material

Thoughts

• Unidata may want to explore options with UW-SSEC regarding McIDAS-V and the IDV.
• Unidata, with the RAMADDA and THREDDS applications, can offer many solutions to the community at large.
• The Pacific Ocean region is hindered with small bandwidth. Spatial sub-setting would be of great benefit to this group.
• Social media is gaining much traction, both for disseminating information AND gathering information.
