This report updates the status of Unidata's IDV development efforts since the last report (April, 2008).

• IDV version 2.5 was released on May 08, 2008, and can be downloaded at http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/downloads/idv/.

  This was mainly a maintenance release, but included a chooser for remote access to Level II radar data from a THREDDS Data Server (TDS). See the IDV 2.5 Release Notes, for more information.

• The IDV developers attended the Unidata Regional Workshop at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, May 18-20, 2008. This was attended by 23 participants representing 13 institutions. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive. More information is available in the June 2008 CommuniteE-letter.
• Yuan and Jeff completed the initial work on the TC-IDV for the Shanghai Tropical Institute (STI) which was delivered in June ahead of schedule. STI is now evaluating it operationally. An outgrowth of this work is the ability to display and analyze the Automated Tropical Cyclone Forecasting (ATCF) data from the National Hurricane Center in the IDV.
• Jeff has been spending some of his time prototyping the RAMADDA data management framework.
• The developers will be presenting 2 IDV training workshops at the upcoming Unidata Training sessions in November.
• Don and Jeff have been collaborating with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (ABoM) to incorporate some of their VisAD work into the IDV, primarily, scalable vector graphics (PDF/PS/SVG) and objective analysis capabilities.

New development

Development and testing are underway for the next release of the IDV (2.6) which should be released in Fall 2008 after the IDV training workshops in November. New features include:

• Remote access to Level III data from the TDS.
• Publication format (PDF/PS) output of IDV displays.
• Barnes analysis routine for point data.
• Text product display
• Switch to netCDF 4.0
• ATCF hurricane forecast displays
• Contouring performance improvements
• Updated documentation on new features
• Bug fixes and suggested improvements noted at the workshops

Ongoing efforts include:

• Collaborating in the development of VisAD and McIDAS-V
• Keeping up with new Java interfaces and developments
• Various and sundry IDV bug fixes and enhancements.
