In case you missed it — here's a recap of news from the Unidata Program Center for the month of July, 2023.
Highlights from last month:
Version 1.5.1 of MetPy, a collection of tools in Python for reading, visualizing, and performing calculations with weather data, has been released. The project aims to mesh well with the rest of the scientific Python ecosystem, including the Numpy, Scipy, and Matplotlib projects, adding functionality specific to meteorology. This release provides fixes for a few outstanding issues.
AWIPS 20.3.2-0.4 is a beta release, with both EDEX and CAVE installation options. Not all functionality is available yet, but we are working to continually update and add features. Users now have the option of installing their own EDEX or continue to connect to Unidata's public EDEX server.
This installment of AWIPS Tips looks at a python-awips example notebook demonstrating a special EDEX access method that uses ModelSounding objects.
Since 2018, Unidata has been offering JupyterHub resources tailored to the instructional requirements of university atmospheric science classes through the Science Gateway project. For the fall 2023 term, Unidata is once again offering universities (or individual instructors) access to cloud-based JupyterHub servers tailored to the requirements of university atmospheric science courses and workshops.
On the Developer's Blog
Unidata Program Center developers write regularly on technical topics on the Unidata Developer's Blog. The ongoing MetPy Mondays series looks at the defaultdict class, changes in CAPE calculations, getting started with Python and MetPy, and using the Siphon library to access sounding data.
