Larry Oolman of the University of Wyoming's Department of Atmospheric Science has been awarded the 2013 Russell L. DeSouza Award by the Unidata Users committee. The DeSouza Award honors "individuals whose energy, expertise, and active involvement enable the Unidata Program to better serve the geosciences."

Dr. Oolman created and maintains the University of Wyoming weather server for public use; since the site's creation in the early 1990s, it has become a popular resource for global weather information for academic, research, and operational meteorologists. Dr. Oolman was a member of the Unidata Users Committee from 2008 to 2011; he is also a very active with the standardization of aircraft archive data formats, and has worked closely with NCAR on the Unidata NCAR Research Aviation Facility NIMBUS conventions for netcdf.

The 2013 DeSouza Award was be presented to Dr. Oolman during the Unidata Users committee's Fall meeting (3-4 October 2013). (DeSouza awards are typically presented during the Users committee's Spring meeting; this year's ceremony was delayed when a snow storm made it impossible for Dr. Oolman to travel from Wyoming to Boulder to accept the award.) As part of the award ceremony, Dr. Oolman presented brief remarks on the history of the University of Wyoming weather server, program activities in the department, and his history with the Unidata program.

A recording of the award ceremony and Dr. Oolman's talk will be available following the Users committee meeting.
