[netCDF #GFG-507049]: ncdump and ncgen

That's an interesting problem that we haven't seen before.

Do any of the variables salinity, sndspeed, or density have an attribute named
C_format, and if so, what is its value?  Are these variables of type float or
double?

The problem you are seeing could be explained if they had attributes such as
  salinity:C_format="%.3gg" ;
instead of
  salinity:C_format="%.3g" ;

If that's not the problem, could you tell us what version of netCDF you are
using,
what operating system, and send us the output of "ncdump -c" on your file?
