Interesting and thank you for this feedback.

Adding the #define should not have been necessary, however.  Unfortunately,
I don't have enough information to understand why you needed it.

I suspect that a bug exists in version 5.1 of the PG compiler -- the
problem you report below hasn't been reported to occur with any other 
compiler.
