Hi Kara,
Please try
gfortran -o simple simple_xy_wr.o -L/sw/lib/netcdf -lnetcdf
or
gfortran -o simple_xy_wr simple_xy_wr.o /sw/lib/netcdf/libnetcdf.a
If the library is installed in the directory /sw/lib/netcdf/, then either
of those should work, but let us know if they don't.
