No, sorry, we didn't figure out how to implement that, since "(" and
")" are already part of the CDL syntax for declaring the shape of
netCDF variables, so the grammar to permit them in variable names
would be ambiguous.  We looked into trying to use an escape character
for permitting such characters in CDL names, but didn't get much
further with that idea.
