Since the netCDF package built correctly on one of your systems but not
another, it could be that there's something wrong with the development
environment on the one system.  I'm thinking, in particular, of the C
compiler.  The GNU C compiler has many hardware-dependent options for
building it (it can be sensitive to the differences between an Intel CPU
and a "pin-compatible" one from AMD, for example).  It could be that the
C compiler isn't quite right on the one system.  You might keep this in
mind if you notice other wierdnesses on that system.
