Thanks for pointing this out; I had my November CACM sitting on my desk
unread, and was not aware of the MPI-IO effort.  I've forwarded the
information to Glenn Davis, the architect of the netCDF library.  I'll
be interested to learn more about MPI-IO from the URLs you have
provided.
