I have adapted Joe Sirott's Java netCDF code and bolted on an equivalent
to "ncdump" in Java for testing purposes. This is currently a read-only
interface to netCDF files, written in 100% pure Java (no native
methods).

I have Symantec Visual Cafe version 1.0 on my home Mac (a Power
Macintosh 7200/90) that I'm using for playing around with Java in my
spare time. Last weekend, I finally got the netcdf package working on
it, after working around a bug in Visual Cafe with handling packages.

Then I started to develop a simple Java browser for netCDF files. I'm
currently working on that. It will have a "File" menu to open netCDF
files, a "Choice" list to select a variable, and a text display area for
information about the selected variable, including all the information
available from "ncdump".

I could take some time to package up what I've got now, but I also want
to adapt this to the Java 1.1 Remote Method Invocation (RMI) interfaces
following Joe Sirott's example on an earlier (and incompatible) version
of RMI, so applets can use the netCDF Java interface as well as
applications.

If you still have questions about this, feel free to continue this
discussion via email or give me a call at 303-497-8645.
