Try the following:

    1.  Go to the top-level, netCDF source directory.

    2.  Execute the command `make fortran/clean'.

    3.  Edit the file fortran/irix.m4: change the definition of `byte'
        from `integer*1' to `logical*1'.

    4.  Execute the command `make fortran/all fortran/test'.
