I didn't see anything wrong with your setup and I couldn't duplicate
your problem here on our IRIX64 6.2 system.

I've created a 2.4.3beta version for you that might work.  It's 
available at the following URL:

    ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/christi.tar.Z

Try it and let me know what happens.  Please let me know when you get it
so that I can remove it (I don't like supporting multiple versions if I
can possibly help it ;-).
