We don't have this problem on our SunOS 4.1.4 system so our environments
must differ somehow.  Would you please do the following:

    1.  Go to the top-level netCDF, source directory.

    2.  Remove the file `config.cache' if it exists.

    3.  Execute the configure script.  Trap all its output and send it
        to me.

    4.  Send me the file `config.log'.

    5.  Execute the command `make'.  Trap all its output and send it to
        me.
