The easiest thing to do is just get the latest version of netcdf (2.4.1),
which works fine on Linux, I'm told (we don't yet have a Linux platform on
which to test it). Version 2.4.1 is available from:
ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/newtcdf/netcdf.tar.Z
