It is difficult to diagnose the problem remotely, but it can be done.
Two important things are accuracy and patience.

Do the following:

    1.  Go to the top-level source directory.

    2.  Print the contents of the file `VERSION' and send it to me.

    3.  Go into the xdr/ subdirectory.

    4.  List the contents of the directory.  Send the list to me.

    5.  Send the file `msoft.mk' to me.

    6.  Execute the command `nmake /F msoft.mk'.  Trap the output and
        send it to me.
