You will find a reference to a known string bug on AIX platforms in the
FAQ for the netCDF that is accessible through the netCDF Homepage:

URL: http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf/faq.html

The FAQ describes the solution which turns out to be to turn off optimization
for the compiles on the AIX platform. The bug is in the AIX C compiler.
