Sorry, but these are questions for the HDF group at NCSA, at

It doesn't sound like you even need the netCDF interface (which is what we
are responsible for), so you could probably get by just building the basic
HDF library.  The Frequently Asked Questions list for HDF, available from

includes a description of how to do this.
