19991126: GEMPAK Questions

Jess,

Since we don't provide you with Gempak, I don't know when you have
upgraded your distribution, or what version you have. The last
distribution we have from NCEP is v 5.4. Any map and text atributes
are configurable, so you should be able to replicate older graphics.
Nothing in this area has changes since 5.2 or 5.1.

Generally, aside from the 3 hardware fonts (Courier, Helvitica and
Times)- there are regular, italics, bold, and bold italics versions as well
as the software font. See the online help for TEXT for which font numbers
correspond to the 12 font types. If the text appears kind of thin and rounded,
then it could be that "sw" was defaulted on the TEXT line instead of "hw".
You should specify hw or sw on your TEXT definition so that you don't
inherit a previous setting.

As for may backgrounds, these can always be specified using $MAPFIL.
The default is $MAPFIL=hipowo.cia, but you can lower the
map resolution with mepowo.gsf for example. See the User guide
documetntation (or your $GEMMAPS directory) for maps that you have
available. Since $MAPFIL is a hidden variable, it does not show up in your
"display" listing, but it is in your gemglb.nts.
