Mike,

You need at least 3 grid points for both kx,ky due to the requirements
of calculating many of the grid functions.

The gr -6 errtor you get is from grrnav.f which has:
        IF  ( (ier .ne. 0) .or. (kx .le. 2) .or. (ky .le. 2) )  THEN
            iret = -6
            RETURN
        END IF
