[Datastream #KFY-605765]: RE: [ldm-users] 20190604: major upcoming change to IDD NIMAGE datastream

Hi Robert,

re:
> Will ADDE access still be available?

I assume that you mean for the reconstituted ABI L2 images delivered as tiles in
NOAAPort and the other L2 products? If that is the question, then the answer
is and has been for some time yes.

The ADDE datasets for NOAAPort-delivered GOES-R/S (16/17 currently) L2
products are:

NPGOESR - GOES-East ABI L2 imagery and other L2 products
NPGOESS - GOES-West ABI L2 imagery and other L2 products (when the other
            L2 products become available)

I am in the midst of combining the functionality of the McIDAS CORE ABIN
servers and the SCMI servers that I wrote for the NOAAPort ABI L2 imagery
into one server set (ADIR and AGET) that can serve all fo the data. This
consolidation has been made possible by adopting use of the GOES-R mission
standard names for all of the L2 products (remember that the NOAAPort
ABI imagery are also L2 products, not L1b). The difference in speed in
serving the same imagery using my original SCMI servers and a new, test
version that understands the GOES-R mission standard names can be
experienced by loading the same image/image loop from two different
ADDE servers:

lead.unidata.ucar.edu - new, test servers
atm.ucar.edu - original SCMI servers (adde.ucar.edu points to
atm.ucar.edu so they are the same)

Again, the dataset group names are NPGOESR and NPGOESS.

As soon as I finish the combined servers (I already have the ADIR server
working), I will be lobbying SSEC to adopt my changes (which are not
minor) into a core-supported ABIN server set. If they do want to do
this, the new servers should be available in SSEC McIDAS under a different
name and possibly in the XRD section of their distribution.

re:
> Is there a plan to end that soon (within the next couple of years)?

That is a much bigger question that I can not answer. It is unclear to
me what Unidata will be doing wrt McIDAS and McIDAS ADDE when I retire
(I'll be 69 in August, gasp!). Given that we are serving on the order
of 1 TB/day via ADDE (!), I would hope that the effort will continue. :-)

Cheers,

Tom
