Welcome back to AWIPS Tips! This week's tip is all about working with the Points and Baselines tools. These tools are interactive reference graphics in a map editor that we use for creating any non-plan view display type in the Volume Browser. This 4-hour interactive workshop is designed to introduce participants to the MetPy Python package and accessing data products made available by Unidata. If you or someone you know has an interest in getting started with MetPy workflows, this is an optimal place to start.
The Unidata Program Center is pleased to welcome new members to the program's governing committees. Committee members serve three-year terms, meeting twice each year to provide feedback on the effectiveness of the Unidata Program and advise staff on issues facing the university community. Appointments reflect the range of large and small colleges and universities with undergraduate and graduate emphases where Unidata systems are in use. The 102th American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting in will be held 23-27 January 2022 in Houston, TX. This year's theme is “Environmental Security: weather, water and climate for a more secure world.” The submission deadline for abstracts has been changed to 8 September 2021.
Welcome back to AWIPS Tips! Today we're going to go over a brief overview of the backend component of AWIPS: EDEX. EDEX is the Environmental Data Exchange system that comprises the server side of AWIPS; it handles functions such as requesting raw data, decoding and ingesting data, storing processed data, and dealing with data requests from CAVE and python-awips connections.
Welcome back to AWIPS Tips! Today's focus is on CAVE'S Volume Browser. The Volume Browser is a tool for accessing model output and point sources like RAOB, METAR, and Profiler datasets. Rather than choosing from the preconfigured options in the default Data Menus, the Volume Browser allows you to select the exact sources, fields, planes, or points to display. The Volume Browser also has options for vertical cross sections, time series, and other display types, but today we will focus specifically on the default display type: plan views.
The Unidata Program Center's three summer student interns — Lydia Bunting from Texas Tech University, Connor Cozad from the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and Isabelle Pfander from Willamette University in Oregon — have come to the end of their summer appointments. After a summer of dedicated work they presented the results of their projects to the UPC staff on July 28, 2021. Welcome back to AWIPS Tips! With last month’s release of AWIPS, we have updated Unidata's public EDEX to include new GOES products like Geocolor, CloudSnow, and DebraDust. Check out this video below to see how you can create your own GOES geocolor plots using Jupyter Notebooks and python-awips without downloading any data.
The abstract submission deadline for the 2022 AMS meeting has been extended.

The American Geophysical Union's 2021 Fall Meeting in will be held 13-17 December 2021 in New Orleans, LA. This year's theme is “Science is Society.” The submission deadline for abstracts is 4 August 2021.
The Integrated Data Viewer (IDV) version 6.0 is now available. This release features a new grid coverage data type that eases the process of creating spatial subsets that cross grid boundaries, enhancements to the IDV's volume rendering engine, and improvements to the quality of images captured from the display. Under-the-hood improvements include a switch to the OpenJDK Java libraries and updated software certificates. In addition, this release includes updates to existing features and incorporates the latest netCDF-Java library.
