The fifth NOAA AI Workshop on Leveraging Artificial Intelligence in Environmental Sciences will be held September 19–21, 2023 as a virtual gathering coordinated by the NOAA Center for Artificial Intelligence.
Welcome back to AWIPS Tips! This week we're going to take a bit of a deep dive into a useful feature in CAVE: sampling. If you are new to AWIPS Tips, you can take a look at one of our first blogs, which also very briefly touches on sampling at the very end of the blog.
The Unidata Program Center's three summer student interns — Jhamieka Greenwood from Florida State University, Erin Rhoades from Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Jessica Souza from Texas Tech University — have come to the end of their summer appointments. After a summer of dedicated work they presented the results of their projects to the UPC staff on July 27, 2023. You can find videos of their presentations to the UPC staff on the Unidata Seminar Series page.
This summer, I had a fantastic time as a Unidata intern, strengthening my Python and data visualization skills. Even though my internship was fully remote, I was still able to have a great experience and attend many events at UCAR. My mentor, Thomas Martin, and the rest of the Unidata staff were very helpful and always available for guidance during my time with Unidata.
The 2023 Unidata Users Workshop, with the theme Storytelling with Earth Systems Science Data: Challenges and Opportunities for Effective, Ethical, and Reproducible Science , took place June 5-8 Boulder, Colorado and online. The Unidata Users Committee hosted the workshop to advance our collective ability to tell effective and ethical stories using Earth System Science Data. The challenge of storytelling with our data was infused throughout the event; workshop attendees ranging from graduate students to senior scientists explored ways to communicate the meaning of scientific ideas in effective and ethical ways, using a variety of different kinds of data, and taking advantage of new tools like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML).
Welcome back to AWIPS Tips! Today we're going to talk about the Local Data Manager (LDM) and how it's used within AWIPS. LDM is also developed by Unidata, and is a powerful Unidata developed software tool that is used to acquire and distribute data between computers. LDM can be installed independently, however within AWIPS, it is included in the base EDEX installation along with EDEXbridge and many other software components. On EDEX machines it is and installed to /awips2/ldm.
