Larry Oolman of the University of Wyoming's Department of Atmospheric Science has been awarded the 2013 Russell L. DeSouza Award by the Unidata Users committee. The DeSouza Award honors "individuals whose energy, expertise, and active involvement enable the Unidata Program to better serve the geosciences."
Applications are invited for two Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Arctic Atmospheric Research affiliated with the Probing the Atmosphere of the High Arctic (PAHA) project. Using measurements from the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL) at Eureka, Nunavut and measurements from other sites around the Arctic and the rest of the globe, the PAHA project is investigating the changing atmosphere of the Canadian High Arctic. This project also operates in association with the NSERC CREATE Training Program in Arctic Atmospheric Science.

The American Geophysical Union is developing the Thriving Earth Exchange to connect communities, scientists, and funders (or Seekers, Solvers, and Sponsors in the language of the Exchange) and bring Earth and Space science to bear on local challenges.
Program Director Raj Pandya explains the Thriving Earth Exchange this way: "Communities post their challenges; scientists suggest solutions; judges select the best solutions; the scientists get a financial reward; and the scientists, communities, and sponsors have the chance to work together to implement those solutions."
Version 4.3.6 of the netCDF Operators (NCO) has been released. NCO is an Open Source package that consists of a dozen standalone, command-line programs that take netCDF files as input, then operate (e.g., derive new data, average, print, hyperslab, manipulate metadata) and output the results to screen or files in text, binary, or netCDF formats.

In April, 2013, the first UPC-release of AWIPS II (version 13.2.1) was provided for a limited number of universities. Now, Unidata welcomes additional sites to join this program. Please read further for details on how to participate as a beta tester.
