In addition to the package version and your OS/platform details, please also supply the other information listed here: http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/docs/netcdf-install/Reporting-Problems.html Also it would be useful to know whether you need the new netCDF-4 features or just the simpler netCDF-3 capabilities, that are sufficient to read most existing netCDF data. In the latter case, building netCDF is easier, because you don't need to first install HDF5.
