[netCDF #XPX-494461]: question about fortran

Robo,

The netcdf.tar.gz file is for building a netCDF library and utilities
from the program sources in C, C++, and Fortran. It is easy to build
on most Unix systems, but requires more expertise on a Windows system
to build the necessary libraries from source. The other files I
mentioned:

> ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/contrib/win32/win32_ifort_dll.tar.gz
> ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/contrib/win32/win32_pgi_dll.tar.gz

have libraries (DLL's in Window terminology) that have already been
compiled for particular Windows Fortran environments. Some people
have reported that it is easier to install and use these compiled
libraries than to try to build netCDF libraries from the original
sources, at least on Windows systems.

If you want to try to build Windows libraries from the sources
instead, please see the instructions for building under the MinGW or
Cygwin environments in this guide:

http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/docs/netcdf-install.html#Platform-Specific-Notes

Otherwise, for more specific instructions about how to install and use
the DLL compiled libraries, see these instructions:

http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/docs/netcdf-install.html#Windows

If you still have problems, send us information about what doesn't
work, but you may have to wait until our Windows expert returns from
vacation to get answers.
