Evan,

I have just put out an alpha18 netCDF-4 release, here:
ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/netcdf-4/netcdf-4.0-alpha18.tar.gz

This alpha release requires the alpha 5 release of HDF5 1.8.0.

Installation instructions can be found here:

Please let me know if you encounter any problems building it.
