Looks like we are neighbours!

Try setting -DpgiFortran in your CPPFLAGS.

Are you sure you want to take responsibility for setting -fPIC and any other 
shared library options? Use the --enable-shared configure option to see what 
libtool comes up with for your system.

If putting pgiFortran in the CPPFLAGS doesn't work, send me the config.log file 
as well as the full output from configure and make.

NetCDF-4 is known to work well with gfortran - it is tested daily. So there is 
a way to get this working for you.
