Subject: Building 64-bit netCDF for SGI/Linux with ifort 8.1 and icc

Hi John,

Re: our phone call, you should download the latest released source
tarball for version 3.6.0-p1 from

  ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/netcdf.tar.gz

The documentation, including the "NetCDF Installation and Porting
Guide" is accessible from

  http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf/docs/

The "Quick Instructions for Installing NetCDF on Unix" outline the
steps:

http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf/docs/netcdf-install/Quick-Instructions-for-Installing-NetCDF-on-Unix.html

but that will probably not give you a 64-bit version. For that, the
options to give to the compiler depend on what compiler you're using,
and the section on "Building on 64 Bit Platforms":

http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf/docs/netcdf-install/Building-on-64-Bit-Platforms.html

doesn't list the Intel compilers, so the next place to look is "Other
Builds of the netCDF Package":

  http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf/docs/other-builds.html

where you will find several references to building with ifort,
including "SGI Altix (Itanium2) running redhat-release-3AS-2 Linux
2.4.21-sgi303r2 using Intel compilers" that sounds like just what you
need:

If you have any more questions, please send them to
