[netCDF #RAN-492926]: Re: [Fwd: Fwd: [Support] opendap netcdf

Hi Benno,

Yes, the netCDF Conventions directory was established in 1991, before
the Web and URI's existed. The sentence on the Conventions web page:

Alternatively, the conventions document stored here may reference a
URL for a set of netCDF conventions that are maintained elsewhere.

is unclear about where the reference is for a set of netCDF conventions.
It was intended that the Conventions web page have URIs for the
registered conventions, but I can see how it could be interpreted to
mean that a document at the FTP site should contain such a reference.
I've just changed it to read

This web page is now the preferred and authoritative location for
registering a URI reference to a set of conventions maintained
elsewhere. The FTP site will be preserved for compatibility with
existing references, but authors of new conventions should submit a
request to support-netcdf@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx for listing on this page.

I've also attempted to do some additional cleanup of the Conventions
web page, but if you see additional problems or even a typo, please let
us know.

Thanks!
