Hi Julia,
I don't know of a COARDS compliance test program, but you can run "ncdump -c"
on a
file and compare the output with the COARDS conventions:

The CF conventions were designed to be a compatible extension of the COARDS
conventions, so sometimes CF-compliant files are also COARDS-compliant.
Sorry, but we don't have any examples for using GMT with netCDF files.
