I may be able to look at this next week to try to reproduce the
problem on MacOS X 10.2.1, but for now, you might just try getting the
binary distribution for MacOSX which has already been compiled and
see if that works for you:

  ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/binary/macosx_10.1-powerpc/netcdf-3.5.0.tar.gz
If you have "fink", you can also get a pre-built binary distribution
for netCDF via that package installer.
