For a LINUX platform, as described in the netcdf/src/INSTALL file, you
have to set the environment variable CPPFLAGS to contain
'-Df2cFortran' for the Fortran interface to be compiled correctly for
g77.  Instructions for how to set environment variables are available
in the newer version of the INSTALL file at

 http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf/INSTALL

in the section "SETTING ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES:".  

So try the following:

    1.  Go to the top-level source directory.

    2.  Execute the command "make distclean".  Don't worry if it fails.

    3.  Remove the file "config.cache" if it exists.

    4.  Set your environment variables as described above, making sure
        the CPPFLAGS environment variable includes "-Df2cFortran".

    6.  Re-execute the configure script.

    7.  Execute the command "make".

    8.  Execute the command "make test".

    9.  Execute the command "make install", to install the library
        somewhere else than where you built it.
