I've never seen the above error before and don't understand how it could
occur.

Would you please do the following:

    1.  Send me the file containing the standard output and standard
        error of the configure script.

    2.  Send me the file "config.log", which is in the top-level 
        directory.

    3.  Go into the libsrc/ subdirectory and execute the following
        command:

            make attr.i
            
        Then send me the file "attr.i".
