Sorry to have taken so long to respond to your question, but it got
lost in my inbox during a busy period, and I just noticed it today :-(.

Not as far as I know.

We eliminated globals in moving to netCDF-3 in an effort to make it
easier to multithread in a later version, but that's about it.
