Did you use the current netcdf 2.4 beta6 release (January 1996) for the
port, or was this the version 2.3.2 from June 1993?  The former has some
significant portability enhancements that might make porting to the X86
easier.

Also, as of yesterday we have succeeded in porting netCDF 2.4 to MS-DOS, so
the changes from that port that will be in the final release of netCDF 2.4
(expected late this week or next), might also get over the obstacles you
have seen.
