Are you sure you are linking against the new version of the netCDF library?
The test program you sent works fine here when linked against the 2.4-beta
library on a SPARCstation/SunOS 5.4 platform.  It appears that this bug
wasn't mentioned in the list of fixes, but it appears it was fixed, unless
it only occurs on a specific platform.  What OS and compiler were you using?
