I think you may have our FTP site (ftp.unidata.ucar.edu) confused with
NCSA's (ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu).  The latter is the distribution source for HDF
software, including release 3.3r3.  Their software supports our netCDF
interface to HDF files, and will also read our netCDF files, but only writes
HDF-formatted files.

The Macintosh is not one of the platforms on which we test our netCDF
software, although we do make some user-contributed ports available without
testing.  That is probably not the sort of thing you want to include on your
CD.
