Jim,

You need to built from source because the Linux binaries needs to be
configured for the different venders otherwise  one looses some
functionality, ie logging. For example the syslog.pid is in different
directories, named differently, etc. Also UPC doesn't have all different
versions of Linux running.  If you build from source, then the binaries
are configured for your machine.  Build instuctions are on the LDM web
page.
